Cannobio on Lake Maggiore: Sunday Market, Boat from Locarno and What to Book
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Go to Cannobio on a Sunday, or skip the market and treat it as a quiet lakeside town. The Ticino tourist board lists the market on the lakefront every Sunday from 8 am until 3 pm. Cannobio is the first Italian town across the border from Switzerland, and the board says you can get there by boat from Locarno or Brissago. There are few bookable tours here, and most have no reviews yet.
The Sunday market
The market stands on the lakefront. The tourist board lists regional and Italian cheeses, cold cuts, fresh fish from the lake, breads such as salted bread and focaccias, vegetables, fruit and flowers, plus leather bags and belts, clothing, fabrics and sewing supplies. The square is lined with restaurants and bars, so you can sit down for a coffee. It is a local market, not a sight: if you are looking for lake fish or cheese, it is the main reason to come, and on any other day of the week it is not there.
From Locarno by boat
The Ticino tourist board names the boat from Locarno or Brissago as one of two ways in; the other is by car through the Madonna di Ponte customs post. The Italian lake navigation published its 2026 summer timetable for the Cannero, Luino and Cannobio line for 29 March to 4 October. That window has already ended, so another timetable applies, so look up the crossing and the return time on the operator’s site before you plan a Sunday.
Two practical points:
- The border. Locarno is in Switzerland. The tourist board says visitors returning to Switzerland must pass through customs clearance, so carry an identity document and your purchases.
- The return. Check the last boat back before you start eating lunch; a market that ends at 3 pm and a boat that leaves earlier are a bad combination.
What else Cannobio offers
Local guides describe the lido, with a lawn, pebbles and a playground, the sanctuary of the Santissima Pietà in town and the Orrido di Sant’Anna gorge with a small chapel above it. We have not checked opening times for any of them, and none is a ticketed attraction in our listings.
Tours that start here
Cannobio has few offers on GetYourGuide, and the ones below have no reviews yet. Treat the prices as the listing’s, not as a verdict.
| Offer | Price | Duration | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castelli di Cannero Boat Transfer & Audio Guide | €26 per person | 2 hours | 4.3 from 18 reviews |
| Cannobio: Hiking Tour with Wine Tasting | €60 per person | 9 hours | no reviews |
| Cannobio: Domodossola and Sacred Mountain Tour | €60 per person | 1 day | no reviews |
| Lake Maggiore: Cannero to Cannobio Guided Hike | €300 per group up to 15 | 6 hours | no reviews |
| Bavona Valley Tour Ticino incl. Foroglio near Locarno Ascona | €175.29 per person | 3.5 to 7 hours | no reviews |
The only offer with a real review count is the Castelli di Cannero ticket. The listing describes a boat transfer from Cannero Riviera to the medieval castle ruins on the water, with an audio guide. The operator that sells it lists the castles among its sites for 2026, a season that ran from 12 March to 8 November. The Domodossola tour says you walk through the weekly market there, with transfers, a guide and lunch included. The hike along the old People’s Trail between Cannero and Cannobio is priced per group, which comes to €20 a head for a full group of 15 and far more for a couple. The Bavona Valley tour is on the Swiss side near Locarno; the description calls it an ethnographic guided tour of a valley with a stone-built past.
Who should go
- Food lovers on a Sunday: yes, for the market and a lakefront lunch.
- Anyone based in Stresa: Cannobio lies in the northern part of the lake and the Borromean Islands are Stresa’s own boat day; we have no verified crossing time between the two.
- Visitors from Ticino: the boat is the easy way, if the timetable fits your day.
- Travellers who want a guided day: every tour here has no or few reviews, so read the booking page.

The verdict
Cannobio is a Sunday market and a lakefront lunch, best reached by boat from Locarno if the timetable allows. If you want a booked experience, the Castelli di Cannero ticket is the one with reviews.
