Mottarone: Is the Cable Car Running, and Is Alpyland Worth the Drive?

Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read

A green mountain ridge rising above the blue water and scattered towns of Lake Maggiore

The Stresa–Mottarone cable car is not running. If you want the summit view or Alpyland, plan on reaching Mottarone by road and check the mountain weather before leaving. The trip is worthwhile on a clear day for the panorama and the 1.2-kilometre alpine coaster; it is a poor use of a lake day when cloud covers the summit. Alpyland tickets start at €6.50 for an adult ride and €5.50 for a reduced child ride, but the attraction can close when the weather turns.

What happened to the cable car?

Stresa’s tourist office labels the Stresa–Alpino–Mottarone cable car simply as closed. Its page still describes the former 20-minute ascent from the lakeside edge of Stresa, which is why old guides can make it sound like a current transport option. Do not build an itinerary around that journey or around the intermediate stop at the Alpinia garden.

This changes the character of the excursion. Mottarone is no longer an effortless add-on to an island day: reaching the summit requires a car, taxi or a substantial mountain outing. If you do not drive, ask the Stresa tourist office about current local transport rather than trusting an old cable-car timetable.

What is at the top?

Mottarone rises between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. In clear air, the summit gives a wide view towards the Alps and across the surrounding lakes. The view is the main reason to go; Alpyland adds a short, active attraction rather than filling a whole day.

Alpyland is a two-seat alpine coaster on a 1.2-kilometre rail. The rider controls the speed with a brake, and the car is pulled back up automatically. The operator accepts children from the age of four only if they are at least 100 centimetres tall. Children from four to nine years old (100–120 centimetres) pay the reduced tariff and may only ride with an adult or a companion over 14 who is at least 135 centimetres tall; from nine they ride alone. Check the operator’s rules again before taking a child because admission conditions can change.

Current single-ride prices are €6.50 at the full rate and €5.50 at the reduced rate. Multi-ride tickets exist, but one or two descents are enough for visitors who primarily came for the view. Online tickets are not tied to a named rider and do not reserve a time; the operator says purchases are non-refundable.

When should you go?

Alpyland normally opens daily from early April to late October, then at weekends and over the Christmas holidays from November to March. Hours vary by date, and the calendar can change suddenly because of bad weather. Check the official Alpyland calendar on the morning of your visit, not just when planning the holiday.

Choose the clearest part of the day. A low cloud ceiling removes the panorama that justifies the drive, while rain can close the coaster. Mountain temperatures also differ from the waterfront, so take an extra layer even when Stresa feels warm.

Car or another lake day?

A car makes Mottarone practical and also lets you continue towards Lake Orta instead of returning immediately to Stresa. You can compare rental cars for Lake Maggiore; check the exact excess, deposit and fuel policy for the chosen offer before paying. The climb is not the right first drive for someone uncomfortable with mountain roads.

Without a car, spend that day where public transport is strongest. The hop-on hop-off boat to the three Borromean Islands starts in Stresa, costs €12, carries a 4.4 rating from 4,794 reviews and does not depend on a closed cable car.

Our recommendation: drive to Mottarone only when the summit webcam and Alpyland calendar both look good. Otherwise, book the three-island boat from Stresa and save the mountain for a clear day.
